Comprendre comment la douleur aiguë devient chronique est essentiel au développement de stratégies de prévention et d'intervention précoce afin de réduire les risques de chronicité de la douleur. Un des objectifs de ce programme de recherche est d'identifier différents sous-groupes de patients qui partagent des trajectoires similaires de douleur et d'identifier les facteurs de risque pour des trajectoires de douleur non-résolue. Ces projets combinent une perspective biopsychosociale de la douleur avec des approches méthodologiques innovantes pour comprendre la nature dynamique de l'expérience de la douleur. 

Un deuxième volet de ce programme de recherche vise à explorer l'impact des comorbidités physiques et mentales sur la prévention, l'évaluation, le traitement et l'autogestion de la douleur chronique en soins primaires, secondaires et tertiaires. 

Finalement, les opioïdes jouent un grand rôle dans la gestion de la douleur chronique. Par contre, leur utilisation parmi certains sous-groupes de patients est controversée et il y a peu de données probantes sur l'efficacité à long-terme des opioïdes. Ce dernier volet du programme de recherche vise à examiner l'impact de l'utilisation prolongée des opioïdes sur la condition douloureuse des patients ainsi que de mieux comprendre les facteurs biopsychosociaux qui peuvent influencer les trajectoires de soins chez les patients prenant des opioïdes. Comprendre comment la prise d'opioïdes qui est souvent initiée pour gérer la douleur aiguë se prolongent et devient une thérapie à long-terme permettra d'améliorer les pratiques cliniques. 

Gabrielle Pagé détient un doctorat en psychologie clinique. Elle est chercheure boursière junior 1 des Fonds de recherche en santé - Québec et professeure sous octroi adjointe au Département d'anesthésiologie et médecine de la douleur ainsi qu'au Département de psychologie de l'Université de Montréal. Elle pratique comme psychologue à l'Unité de gestion de la douleur Alan Edwards à l'Hôpital général de Montréal. Ses intérêts de recherche incluent la transition de la douleur aiguë à chronique, les déterminants biopsychosociaux du développement et maintenance de la douleur chronique, l'impact des comorbidités physiques et mentales sur l'expérience et la gestion de la douleur, l'association entre l'expérience de stress et la douleur, ainsi que les trajectoires de soins. Ses études sont principalement épidémiologiques et en contexte de vie réelle.
