Our research continues in the tradition of what has become known as “the Montréal School,” whose subject is organizational communication seen not as communication in the organization but rather the organization as communication or even the organization in communication. The purpose of this research is to explore and explain “organizing,” or the dynamic construction of the basics of order in members’ conversations, and the materialization of their activities in the texts and other artifacts they produce. We are currently exploring the phenomenon of authority, using direct observations and interviews with members, in keeping with the assumption that an organization must have one or more authors to exist. The challenge of maintaining authority is particularly complicated by any very rapid technological innovation in the field of communication.
