Geography of Crime: Tales from Brazil

Speaker : Silas Nogueira de Melo

Silas Melo is an Associate Professor at Universidade Estadual do Maranhão, Brazil. He is currently a post-doctoral researcher at CICC (UdeM) and works on issues around the geography of crime, spatial analysis, and Global South.

Summary

The spatial perspective of crimes has been increasing in criminology literature in the past decade. However, most of the studies are from Western countries.

This presentation draws on several spatial analysis to investigate the dynamics of crime in Brazil. Findings indicate that situational (spatial/temporal) context not only matters but that they are crucial for crime prevention.
