Mission

The Université de Montréal's Vice-Rectorate of Research, Discovery, Creation and Innovation serves to oversee and generally guide the University's scientific research. Furthermore, it supports the University's contribution to scientific, cultural, social and economic progress through the exploitation, which includes commercialization, of research findings and creative output.

The Vice-Rectorate specifically ensures :

  • The development of research initiatives and collaborations in the University's three salient research areas: the humanities and social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and health and biomedical sciences;
  • The coordination of research, promotion and scientific exchange efforts of over 2500 professors and researchers from 13 faculties and schools, working in 200 research centres, chairs, groups and institutes;
  • The implementation of research  and higher education environments in line with the highest standards of scientific and academic excellence, and responding to the needs for a qualified workforce in Québec, Canada and partner countries;
  • The rigorous application of policies and rules concerning good practice in research conduct;

Regarding research :

The Vice-rectorate for Research, Discovery, Creation and Innovation is assisted by the Office of Research Services and Development (BRDV in French). The BRDV's responsibility is to advise researchers from the outset of their projects, and to guide them during the research financing process, funding administration, and exploitation of findings.

The BRDV is also in charge of certain special projects, such as IRICoR and the National Immune Monitoring Laboratory.

The BRDV supervises the Centre of Digital Expertise for Research (CEN-R in French), which is responsible for supporting the development and improvement of research  resources in a digital environment. The CEN-R provides advice and support to researchers and research units both in the creation of digital document models and in the structuring of research data, as well as in the development of IT tools and platforms, both in the context of research projects as well as in the promotion of research results and the expertise of researchers.

Strategic Plan : A New Plan for Research, Discovery, Creation and Innovation 2022-27

The Research, Discovery, Creation, Innovation 2022-27 action plan builds on the 10 areas of excellence of the Université de Montréal to mobilize its community around three major strategic priorities :

  • Support collaboration
  • Promote responsibility in research
  • Maximize impact

These priorities revolve around 14 strategies complementing one another and all linked to the Université de Montréal strategic plan : https://www.umontreal.ca/demain/. The implementation of these actions will rest on the enhanced support to the research community, through such mechanisms as the Innovation Lab. These various strategies and mechanisms respond to our vision, namely :

Support UdeM’s teams to enable the passion for research, creation, and innovation, which stirs our research community, to understand, imagine, and build a better and sustainable world.
