Je suis un ethnologue dont les intérêts de recherche portent sur les dimensions morales et épistémologiques de l’exercice de la médecine, le vécu des personnes touchées par l’aide humanitaire et l’institutionnalisation de l’enseignement de la santé mondiale. Je réalise des recherches ethnographiques en Haïti depuis 1997. J'ai également mené des projets de recherche aux États-Unis et en République dominicaine. Je donne des cours sur la théorie de l’anthropologie médicale, l’épistémologie, les Caraïbes, la santé mentale et la méthodologie de recherche. Je suis disponible pour travailler avec des postdoctorants et des étudiants aux cycles supérieurs qui aimeraient effectuer des recherches dans ces domaines.

PROJETS DE RECHERCHE

Cliniciens locaux et rouages de la santé mondiale en Haïti

S’appuyant sur des travaux ethnographiques qui ont eu lieu dans le nord d’Haïti, ce projet analyse les rôles et perspectives des cliniciens « locaux » par rapport aux nombreux projets d’aide internationale omniprésents dans leur milieu de travail. J’étudie précisément l’effet des obligations, des pratiques de don et de la migration internationale sur l’économie morale de l’aide médicale en Haïti.

Formation des leaders : perspectives critiques sur l’enseignement de la santé mondiale aux États-Unis

J’ai effectué une étude de terrain sur le premier programme de maîtrise en santé mondiale aux États-Unis pour cerner le rôle qu’ont les sciences de la gestion et de l’administration (tout particulièrement les notions de leadership et de partenariat) sur la conception des interventions dans le domaine.

Appui au continuum de soins mère-enfant (ACOSME), Haïti

Je suis chercheur principal des projets menés par l’initiative Appui au continuum de soins mère-enfant (ACOSME) financée par Affaires mondiales Canada et mise en œuvre par l’Unité de santé internationale de l’Université de Montréal et le CECI. En partenariat avec des collègues haïtiens, je mets sur pied des projets de recherche qualitative visant à mieux cerner les besoins des femmes et des enfants du nord d’Haïti et à améliorer les services de santé qui leur sont offerts.

I am a sociocultural anthropologist with research interests in the moral and epistemological dimensions of medical practice, the lived experiences that result from humanitarian aid encounters and the institutionalization of global health education and practice. I have carried out ethnographic research in Haiti since 1997, and have also conducted research projects in the United States and in the Dominican Republic.  I teach courses in medical anthropology theory, epistemology, the Caribbean, mental health and research methods.  I am interested in working with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who wish to conduct research in these areas. 

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Local Clinicians and the Workings of Global Health in Haiti 

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in northern Haiti, this project analyses the roles and perspectives of "local" clinicians vis-à-vis the numerous international aid projects that operate in their workplaces. Specifically, I examine how obligations, gift practices, and overseas emigration shape the moral economy of medical aid in Haiti.

Training Leaders: Critical Perspectives on American Global Health Education

I conducted fieldwork at the first Masters in Global Health program in the United States to understand how management and administration sciences (in particular the notions of leadership and partnership) are shaping contemporary notions of health interventions in this emerging academic discipline.

ACOSME (Support for the Continuum of Maternal-Child Healthcare), Haiti

I am the Principal Investigator for research projects within ACOSME (Appui au continuum de soins mère-enfant), an initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada and Implemented by the Université de Montréal's International Health Unit (USI).  In partnership with Haitian colleagues, I am developing a series of qualitative research projects to better understand the health needs of women and children in northern Haiti and improve health services for this population.
