Profile

Research expertise

My expertise lies at the intersection of speech-language pathology, cognitive science, neurodevelopment, and artificial intelligence. My research aims to better understand the heterogeneity of developmental disorders affecting speech, language, reading, and writing, particularly in bilingual and multilingual children.

I develop precision speech-language pathology approaches that combine speech analysis, machine learning, Bayesian modelling, neuroimaging, and experimental methods to improve screening, clarify underlying cognitive mechanisms, and personalize intervention. Particular attention is given to model interpretability, linguistic and cultural equity, and the preservation of clinical judgment in the use of artificial intelligence.

In the longer term, my goal is to develop clinically useful tools and models that move beyond broad diagnostic categories toward a more individualized understanding of developmental profiles and intervention needs.

Biography

Selçuk Güven is an Associate Professor at the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Université de Montréal, and a Regular Researcher in the Brain and Child Development Axis at the Azrieli Research Centre of CHU Sainte-Justine. He directs COALab – Cognition, Oral & Written Language Disorders, and AI Laboratory, where he leads an interdisciplinary research program at the intersection of speech-language pathology, cognitive science, developmental neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.

Trained as a speech-language pathologist, he completed his graduate studies in Europe and Türkiye, including a master’s degree at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) and a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology at Anadolu University. His postdoctoral training subsequently took him to Purdue University, where he studied developmental language disorder, and to McGill University for postdoctoral research and clinical training. He later pursued advanced training in artificial intelligence and computational methods at Université de Montréal through an IVADO fellowship, within Montréal’s broader AI research ecosystem.

Since joining Université de Montréal in 2021, he has developed a research program in precision speech-language pathology, combining computational modelling, artificial intelligence, speech analysis, Bayesian modelling, and neuroimaging to better understand, identify, and address developmental disorders of speech, language, reading, and writing. His work also examines bilingual and multilingual development and the development of personalized and responsible approaches to clinical assessment and intervention. He contributes to national and international collaborations spanning speech-language pathology, language sciences, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.
