Centre interuniversitaire québécois de statistiques sociales
Profile
About us
The Quebec Interuniversity Centre for Social Statistics (QICSS) was established in 2000 to provide all Quebec researchers with access to Statistics Canada microdata, as well as the space, equipment and professional and technical resources required to exploit these data. The QICSS also provides support for the next generation of researchers, through training and scholarship programs, and organizes numerous events to promote the visibility and impact of the results of research projects carried out in its secure laboratories. The QICSS has five laboratories, located at Université de Montréal, McGill University, Université du Québec à Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke and Université Laval.
Mission: To enrich and energize quantitative social and health research for the well-being of Quebecers by facilitating access to numerous detailed datasets.
Vision: As an indispensable ally of researchers, the QICSS mobilizes its community to facilitate the transition to virtual access to detailed data, enabling them to fully exploit its analytical potential.
Values
- Accessibility: We facilitate access to detailed data by supporting the next generation with targeted training and a scholarship program, while remaining easily accessible to better support our community.
Remote access to an ever-increasing amount of detailed data ensures optimal accessibility. - Partnership: We believe in the power of partnerships.
We work with all Quebec universities, and collaborate with a wide range of organizations, including Statistics Canada, the Institut de la statistique du Québec, and the Canadian Research Data Centre Network, to enrich our data offering and maximize the impact of our work. - Integrity: We place the utmost importance on promoting responsible research conduct and respecting the rules of confidentiality and data protection, thereby ensuring the trust of our partners and our research community.
- Inclusivity: We are committed to facilitating the availability of a broad set of data of interest to a wide range of disciplines, from all academic institutions in Quebec.
We promote the application of principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in our organizational practices and encourage EDI research.
Development areas
- Cross-cutting theme: An ally to our research community
The CIQSS’s role as an ally to its research community is a cross-cutting theme integrated into each of the four development themes.
This crucial aspect involves representing the interests of our research community as a whole, taking into account its diverse viewpoints and varied realities with our partners. - 1. Transition to virtual access
Support the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) and Statistics Canada in the transition to a virtual environment.
Develop and implement a communications plan to support our research community in this transition. - 2. Training and support
Offer an increased number of workshops and training courses to meet the current needs of the next generation of professionals, and to facilitate the use of data from Statistics Canada and the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Collaborate with Statistics Canada and RCCDR to provide up-to-date and complete documentation of available data. - 3. Commitment
With our partners, support and facilitate collaboration between researchers from different institutions and disciplines.
This may involve sharing relevant information on data and projects, and developing networking activities. - 4. Partnership
Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations and decision-makers to increase the visibility and influence of the CIQSS and its research community, while promoting the sharing of best practices and resources.
