Research expertise
Dr. Martiniello’s research focuses on braille, accessibility and social inclusion for individuals who are blind or who have low vision. Her research considers the individual, social and cultural factors that influence social participation. She brings expertise as a blind individual who is actively involved on the international braille stage and as a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist who specialized in teaching braille and assistive technology to clients of all ages. She conducts research on supporting the learning of braille throughout adulthood (including for older adults with reduced tactile sensitivity) and on the usability and impact of inclusive technologies that provide non-visual access to information (braille, audio, text-to-speech software). She also conducts research on social participation, including the transition to postsecondary studies and employment for young adults with visual impairments and strategies to support future leaders with visual impairments in higher education and research.
Biography
Natalina Martiniello is an Assistant Professor in Vision Rehabilitation at the School of Optometry, University of Montreal, in Quebec, Canada. Her research focuses on braille, accessibility and social inclusion for blind and low vision individuals, by addressing disparities in blindness rehabilitation services (especially adult braille learning), the usability and impact of accessible technologies, and outcomes in education, employment and other social determinants of health. As the first blind researcher to obtain a Ph.D. in Vision Science in Canada, a cornerstone of her research is the integration of user perspectives into visual impairment research. She is a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, the Chair of Research for the International Council on English Braille, a Subject Matter Expert for the Academy for the Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Educational Professionals (ACVREP), and the immediate Past-President of Braille Literacy Canada.

Recruitment in research
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with strong interest and experience in the domain of braille and assistive technologies for people who are blind, deafblind or who have low vision. The candidate will join the research laboratory of Dr. natalina Martiniello and complete a Ph.D. in Vision Science (Specialization: Visual Impairment Rehabilitation) in the School of Optometry at the Université de Montréal, in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
The individual will work on research to develop evidence-based indicators to guide the selection of braille display technologies for diverse reading and user needs across adulthood. This research will explore the influence of braille display characteristics (e.g. line length, single vs. multiline design, ergonomics, complexity) on reading performance across a range of linear and non-linear reading tasks for education, employment and independent living. This research will also explore the potential impact of age-related declines on the ability to use braille display technologies, and factors to maximize usage for working-age and older adults with acquired vision loss.
