Biography

Dr. Nicolas Chomont est professeur sous octroi agrégé au Département de microbiologie, infectiologie et immunologie de l’Université de Montréal. Son laboratoire est situé au Centre de recherche du CHUM (CRCHUM). Dr. Chomont a obtenu son doctorat en virologie médicale à l’Université Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris VI) sous la direction du Pr. Laurent Bélec au sein du laboratoire du Pr. Michel Kazatchkine. Il a étudié les interactions entre le VIH et les muqueuses génitales et leurs implications sur la transmission sexuelle du virus. Entre 2004 et 2009, il a effectué un stage postdoctoral dans le laboratoire de Dr. Rafick Sékaly à l’Université de Montréal et au CRCHUM. Son travail a mené à l’identification des réservoirs cellulaires du VIH qui sont responsables de la persistance du virus au cours des thérapies antirétrovirales. Dr. Chomont a ensuite déménagé au VGTI-Florida ou il a été nommé « Associate Member ». En tant que chercheur indépendant, il a poursuivi son travail de caractérisation des réservoirs viraux qui constituent l’obstacle majeur à l’éradication du VIH. Depuis janvier 2015, Dr. Chomont a rejoint l’Université de Montréal et le CRCHUM où il dirige un programme de recherche visant à décortiquer les mécanismes moléculaires et immunologiques impliqués dans la latence virale et à mettre au point de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques ayant pour but d’éliminer les réservoirs du VIH.
