Au centre de l’amas de Persée trône la spectaculaire galaxie NGC 1275, où se cache un trou noir supermassif responsable de puissants jets de particules (en rose). Éjectées bien au-delà de la galaxie, ces particules entretiendraient la température incroyablement élevée (60 millions de degrés Celsius) des gaz qui s’étendent entre les galaxies (en bleu).

Profile
Research expertise
I am an expert in the study of big black holes – those that lie at the centres of massive galaxies. I use a combination of X-ray (e.g. Chandra, XMM-Newton, Rosat), radio (e.g. JVLA, GMRT, ATCA) and optical observations (e.g. HST, VLT) for my work. The ultimate goal of my research is to provide a detailed view on the role black hole feedback plays in the formation and evolution of galaxies, from heating to metal entrainment, as well as black hole growth. Other topics I work on include observational signatures of radio halos in cluster mergers, hyper-luminours infrared galaxies, numerical simulations of jets, and compact objects in general.
Biography
Julie is an astrophysicist at Université de Montréal, working primarly on high-energy and extragalactic astrophysics. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics of Black Holes . These Chairs are awarded to emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity. Prior to holding a faculty position at the Université de Montréal, she was an Einstein fellow at Stanford University. Julie also completed her Ph. D. at the University of Cambridge.
She was raised in Montreal and is originally half-Chilean, half-Czech. Back in 2007, she completed a Bachelor’s degree in physics at the Université de Montréal and then pursued a Master’s degree in astrophysics on the kinematical analysis of three Sculptor Group galaxies.
She is an active advocate for diversity, and recently founded the Diversity Physics committee at her department. She is also a member of the new Diversity and Inclusivety CASCA committee since 2015.
