Special Issue - Equine Microbiota
Description
Recent advances in DNA sequencing technologies have allowed a comprehensive characterization of microbial communities, which led to a better understanding of their role in health and disease. Many studies have used those new technologies to characterize mainly the intestinal microbiota of horses, yielding a baseline of the equine microbiota composition in healthy and sick animals while unraveling many factors that can induce changes in those microorganisms. This knowledge might now be used as the basis for the development of innovative therapeutic and diagnostic approaches to improve equine health.
The objective of this special issue is to collect studies evaluating the importance of the microbiota in horses, including not only the intestinal, but also ocular, cutaneous, vaginal, respiratory tract and other microbial communities. Thus, we invite original research papers and reviews bringing new relevant insights into the equine microbiota.
