Yan Kestens — a Professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Montreal who has recently launched a pan-Canadian research project called COHESION (https://cohesionstudy.ca/) — talked about the themes explored in the COHESION Study and some of the preliminary findings.

Les thématiques d’intérêt de Yan Kestens sont variées et couvrent la mobilité active et l’exposition aux risques, l’accessibilité aux ressources, le rôle des environnements alimentaires, le vieillissement et la santé mentale.

  • Développement et application d’outils de mesure et d’analyse spatiale visant à caractériser les facteurs et processus impliqués dans les liens entre environnement et santé.
  • Diverses recherches en cours portant sur la dimension spatiale de nos interactions avec l’environnement et l’impact sur la santé : patrons de mobilité et exposition à divers facteurs de risques environnementaux ; influence du cadre bâti, de l’accessibilité aux ressources et des paysages alimentaires sur l’obésité chez les jeunes, la santé mentale, le vieillissement en santé; effets de quartier et transmission du VIH et de l’hépatite C chez les utilisateurs de drogue injectable; impact des ilôts de chaleur urbains et de la qualité de l’air sur la mortalité.
  • D’autres travaux méthodologiques explorent le potentiel des méthodes économétriques de modélisation hédonique comme outil de caractérisation des externalités environnementales influençant les comportements liés à la santé et la santé des populations.

Biography

Yan Kestens holds the CIHR Applied Public Health Chair in Urban Interventions and Population Health.  He has a Ph.D. in Urban Planning (Universite Laval, Quebec City) and a postdoctoral fellowship in Spatial Epidemiology (University of Montreal).  Researcher at the CHUM Research Centre, and Professor under aggregated grant at the Social and Preventive Medicine Department at École de Santé Publique de l'Universite de Montreal.
