Expertise de recherche

Depuis 1995, mes travaux de recherche portent sur le VIH/SIDA et sur les microbicides. Mes travaux ont contribué de façon significative à l’élaboration de plusieurs essais de recherche sur la prévention du VIH, incluant des essais de préparation, des essais d’innocuité (Phases I et II) et des essais d’efficacité (Phases IIB et III).

En reconnaissant que l’élaboration de microbicides est une priorité importante dans la recherche sur le VIH/SIDA, le National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), qui fait partie des US National Institutes of Health (NIH), a mis sur pied en 2006 un nouveau réseau : le Microbicide Trials Network (MTN). Je suis actuellement biostatisticien principal d’un réseau d’essais sur les microbicides appelé le Microbicide Trials Network (MTN). Le MTN est le plus récent des réseaux d’essais cliniques sur le VIH/SIDA financés par le NIAID.

Le portefeuille de recherche du MTN a été créé pour faire face directement à l’urgence imposée par le VIH/SIDA dans le monde. Le portefeuille comprend des essais considérés d’une importance critique pour l’avancement du domaine de la prévention du VIH. Parmi ces essais, plusieurs portent sur l’évaluation de microbicides à base d’antirétroviraux (ARV), incluant des études conçues afin d’évaluer les microbicides en même temps que d’autres approches prometteuses pour la prévention du VIH comme l’utilisation quotidienne d’ARV à titre de prophylaxie avant l’exposition (PrEP). Le MTN est le premier groupe de recherche à faire l’évaluation en parallèle d’un gel microbicide vaginal et de PrEP dans le cadre du même essai.

Il est à noter que le MTN réalise les premières études microbicides chez les femmes enceintes ainsi que des études visant à évaluer l’innocuité de certains microbicides vaginaux pour un usage rectal, une étape importante dans l’élaboration éventuelle d’un microbicide spécifiquement conçu pour un usage rectal. Le MTN comprend 13 unités d’essais cliniques répartis sur 20 sites de recherche clinique dans 7 pays. L’objectif global est de mener des essais cliniques scientifiquement rigoureux et solides sur le plan éthique portant sur l’innocuité et l’efficacité des ces produits dans le but éventuel d’obtenir le droit de les exploiter commercialement.

Mes intérêts de recherche portent sur les modèles mathématiques entre hôtes de la transmission des maladies infectieuses, sur la méthodologie statistique utilisée pour faire l’analyse des données issues d’essais cliniques, sur l’analyse elle-même des données d’essais cliniques, sur les méthodes statistiques utilisées pour le VIH/SIDA et pour les maladies infectieuses ainsi que sur l’élaboration et l’analyse d’essais de prévention du VIH.
