Profile
Research expertise
The work of Dr Séguin bears on the cognitive and emotional aspects of the development of mental health, while taking into account risk and protective factors for substance use and cardiovascular health. His clinical training allows him to work as much with cognitive schemas, information processing approaches and underlying neural functions. His doctoral work (McGill University, 1995) aimed largely at neuropsychological aspects of physical aggression. Subsequent work broadened that conceptual basis to encompass hyperactivity, other externalised and internalised problems as well as cognitive development. A longitudinal study of a birth cohort allowed to examine the eraly development of self-regulation from a cognitive point of view. More recent studies, include pregnancy cohorts. One important hypothesis suggests that self regulation is partly acquired through socialisation. This research investigates the physiological, genetic and both physical and social environnemental bases of that learning from pregnancy. Child characteristics of interest include neuropsychological function as well as early temperament and personality. A key question for rpevention is what are the challenges and resources that affect that development? How does early self regulation lead to mental health? Can early interventions which aim to support families have an imppact on self-regulation?
